Job Summary
Provides leadership and support in the development of ideas and programs to implement the strategic initiative of developing strong public partnerships and an active and informed population. Assists with the production of a number of internal and external communication instruments; coordinates the Sheriff's Office presence in and at various forums, showcases, fairs, and other public events; develops new and emerging communication conduits; and coordinates or manages special projects at the request of the Scott County Sheriff and the Command Staff. Maintains confidential files and ensures Office compliance with governing entities. Work is primarily performed in an office setting. This position may require evening and weekend work in support of events and other communications activities.
Job Description
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Writes, edits, prepares, and produces a variety of effective public information/communication messages for external and internal audiences. Facilitates the creation, expansion, and maintenance of content for both public and internal communications through collaboration with professional department staff.
- Improves existing social media channels; evaluates emerging social media platforms for potential adoption; uses analytics and insight to grow audience share; and creates and enforces model practices. Maintains social media accounts, posts and responds to posts, and monitors social activity related to the Scott County Sheriff's Office.
- Captures high-quality photos in support of communication objectives; maintains digital asset library.
- Coordinates internal events and exhibits; assists with managing production of events; takes photos; coordinate exhibit installation and removal; and writes content for gallery collateral.
- Maintains complex, confidential, and/or involved files.
- Designs and produces brochures or other promotional and educational publications, signs, displays, and materials for the department through the use of various software programs and other methods.
- Works the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors, and any other person or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
- Works the hours and/or shifts assigned and begins and ends work on time.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires equivalency of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Communications, or a directly related field and four years' experience in criminal justice, professional communication, public relations, or office management. The incumbent shall provide a valid driver's license and a reliable means of transportation for the performance of work responsibilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S)
Ability to speak Spanish is desired.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The employee is under the general supervision of the Sheriff and/or Chief Deputy Sheriff. Work is performed according to established guidelines and general instructions. The employee has wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment limited only by periodic review by the supervisor, department procedures, or county policies.
The incumbent directs and oversees the work of others; including, program/service planning & delivery, personnel selection, evaluation of work performance, training, and disciplinary activities.
The incumbent promotes employee professional development and provides coaching and mentoring to others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Typical characteristics of the regular, ongoing work environment of this position requires inside work, typically in an office setting. Attendance at evening/off-site hours meetings may be required. The position is multi-task oriented and includes periods of stress when balancing multiple and varied needs/demands of services.
Physical activities include sedentary to light work: Reaching, sitting, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, stooping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Lifts and/or navigates up to 35 pounds on a routine basis in handling files and equipment necessary for performing the essential duties of the job.
