Class Title: Librarian

Salary: $31.70 - $47.56 Hourly

Provides information services; oversees a specific branch or program function in the library; pursues opportunities for community collaboration; plans, coordinates, and delivers library programs, services, and/or projects. Primary responsibilities fulfilled at various service points, including information desks and circulation desks; May make work assignments to library associates, aides, and volunteers.

Job Description

Welcomes customers to the library, assessing customer needs, and connecting customers with appropriate resources and staff; answering directional and informational questions; providing information services, including research assistance, readers' advisory, chat reference, and instruction.

Plans, delivers, and/or monitors programs, including early literacy classes; markets and promotes programs throughout the library system; and supports outreach to the community, including Readmobile visits.

Assists customers with library accounts and materials, including processing account applications; verifying account information; checking materials in and out; renewing materials; placing holds and interlibrary loan requests; sorting and shelving materials; accepting payment and making change; and responding to customer concerns and disputes.

Assists customers through various aspects of using the library, including accessing library materials, public access catalog, Internet stations, printers, copiers, self-checkout, etc.; reserving meeting rooms; scheduling curbside appointments; faxing and scanning documents; instructing customers in the use of print electronic resources; and troubleshooting equipment problems.

Navigates change, especially technology, and develops skills with new technology.



Markets and promotes library programs and services through the use of displays, digital marketing, and conversations with customers; and works with in coordination with the Library Technology Manager to create promotional materials including social media for in-house programming. 



Provides work direction to staff and volunteers; serves as lead worker in the absence of the Branch Manager. 



Responds to complaints and problems as they arise; refers to supervisor as needed. 



Performs customer account tasks that may include account registration, circulation functions, placing holds and interlibrary loan requests, and accepting payment and making change. 



May support and train new hires, substitutes, and volunteers as directed. 



May represent library at county, city, school, and/or community events. 



Works in all branches of the Library system as the needs of service dictate. 



Participates in job-related meetings, events, and training. 



Works the hours and/or shifts assigned and begins and ends work on time.



Performs other related duties as required or assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications
Requires equivalency of a Bachelor's Degree and two years’ experience working in a library setting. A reliable form of transportation for the performance of work responsibilities is required.

Supervisory Controls
The employee is under general guidance and direction from a director or supervisor.  Work is checked through periodic reports and conferences.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
Typical characteristics of the regular, ongoing work environment of this position requires inside work, typically in a library setting. As a public gathering place, the library has a diverse customer base and is multi-task oriented in the services it both offers and has requested of it.

Physical activities include sedentary to light work: Reaching, sitting, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, stooping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Lifts and/or navigates up to 35 pounds on a routine basis in handling files, materials, and equipment necessary for performing the essential duties of the job.
